Alappuzha Backwaters
Alappuzha
backwaters or Alleppey
backwaters are one of the most exotic backwaters sites of Kerala. With the
Arabian Sea on the west and a vast network of lakes, lagoons and fresh water
rivers crisscrossing it, is a district of immense natural beauty. This
unique topographical aspect gives you an opportunity to observe closely the
impulsive activities of birds, children and the day-to-day village
activities on the water banks. Backwater houseboats (Kettuvalloms) on the
Punnamada Kayal takes you along canals covered with mauve hyacinths past
scenic islands offering sublime views of coconut and paddy fields, Chinese
fishing nets and toddy tapers at work. Alappuzha referred to as the Venice
of the East, has always enjoyed a unique place in the maritime history of
Kerala. The enchanting island of Pathiramanal (Sands of Midnight) on the
backwaters is a favorite haunt of hundreds of rare migratory birds from
different parts of the world. Today, Alappuzha or Alleppey has grown in
importance as a backwater tourist centre and famous for its boat races,
backwater holidays, beaches, marine products and coir industry.
